In my previous post, I asked what heroism meant to you.
The trend seemed to be “courage” or “putting self at risk to help others”; however, in the series I’m looking at, unnecessary self-sacrifice brings pain. One woman sacrifices herself in the hopes to save her prince; in the other series, early on a girl makes a wish to save another and ends up falling into despair. Another woman sacrifices her life/regular activities to try and prevent misfortune from falling on someone she cares about. They all suffer.
So what makes one kind of self-sacrifice heroic, and another kind of self-sacrifice wasteful? Or when we think of “heroism” do we think men self-sacrificing, and not women? Or do we think of women also, but in different ways?
