Independence.

So July 4th is upon us in the United States, and along with your ‘traditional’ cookouts and fireworks and whatnot, it’s supposed to be a day to celebrate independence.

And here I am, talking about Batman and Luke Skywalker.

In Japanese animation, there is a balance shown between ‘independence’ and ‘interdependence’ – independent characters are often deemed as aloof and mysterious, but at the same time suffer from loneliness and depression. In series that require teamwork, they are viewed with suspicion, if not hostility. However, in such series, they eventually learn to trust others, and others eventually trust them. This makes sense: people who are too aloof from others don’t exactly lend themselves to be trusted too easily.

In American media, this sense of ‘independence’ is a virtue, though the independent characters also suffer from loneliness and an inability to connect with others. The best example of this may be the comic hero of Batman.

Interdependent characters – characters that rely on others – are often viewed as making simple mistakes, as being childish and naive. However, when they might need help, others come to their aid, so they do not have to face terrors or nightmares alone. Eventually they may learn to be more responsible and independent. This is easily seen in Japanese tropes of the magical girl series, or superhero team shows, the most famous of these being Sailor Moon. The best American media example of this may be the film hero of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars series: but aside from that, American media tends to view interdependent characters as plot points. Sidekicks, maybe, or the love interest that spurs the hero into action.

But man is not an island, said Donne, and in Japanese “a person cannot stand all alone” (referring to the character 「 人 」 meaning person).

So while you celebrate independence, revel in your connections to others also.
